Commonwealth supported students

A Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) is a type of university enrolment in Australia where the Australian Government subsidises part of the cost of your tuition fees.

This means the Australian Government covers part of the cost of your higher education, while you pay the remainder as your student contribution.

Each higher education provider sets its own student contribution amounts for each unit of study, within limits established by the Australian Government. Contributions may vary between providers and courses. For the most up-to-date information, check the relevant institution’s website.

Eligibility

To be for a Commonwealth supported place, you must be:

  • An Australian citizen who will live and study in Australia for part of the course
  • A New Zealand citizen who will live and study in Australia for the entire course
  • A permanent visa holder who will live and study in Australia for the entire course

Important notes:

  • Commonwealth supported places are not available to international students.
  • Only some courses are Commonwealth supported – the majority are full-fee paying.

Full fee-paying students

The Australian Government does not subsidise course costs for full fee-paying students. These students are responsible for paying the entire tuition fee.

Each higher education provider sets its own tuition fees for each course, so fees can vary between providers and courses. The Government sets a minimum tuition fee, which for domestic students is equal to or higher than the student contribution for Commonwealth supported students in the same course.
