SATAC

Whether you’re looking to enhance your current role, explore a new career direction, or strengthen your experience, these courses provide a strong foundation to help you progress toward your goals.

TAFE SA

TAFE SA is South Australia’s largest provider of vocational education and training, offering nationally recognised qualifications across a wide range of industries. Applying for TAFE SA courses through SATAC is free.

In South Australia, government-supported initiatives such as Free-fee TAFE (often referred to as Free TAFE SA) can also help reduce financial barriers by covering course in selected qualifications aligned to workforce demand (although students may still need to cover some costs like materials, equipment, or student services fees depending on the course).

Where can TAFE SA and VET courses lead?

TAFE SA and qualifications are designed to be flexible and career-focused, opening up multiple pathways depending on your chosen field, level of study, and overall goals and ambitions.

Pathways to university (higher education)

VET qualifications can provide a structured pathway into university study. Depending on the course and , this may include:

  • Progression from Certificate IV, through a Diploma and Advanced Diploma, and on to a

  • Credit or recognition of prior learning in related university programs

  • Direct entry into the second year of some degrees (subject to course and university requirements)

It’s important to check individual course information, as some pathways require completion of specific qualifications (for example, completing a Certificate IV before progressing to a Diploma).

Some university programs also accept Certificate III qualifications and higher as part of their entry pathways. These qualifications do not necessarily need to be in the same field as the course you are applying for. Check Course Search for more details.

Direct employment

Many courses are designed with immediate employment outcomes in mind. On completion, you may be able to move directly into the workforce with industry-relevant skills and a nationally recognised qualification.

Apprenticeships and traineeships

Some courses form part of, or lead into, apprenticeships and traineeships. These typically combine:

  • Paid on-the-job training

  • Structured study through TAFE SA or another registered training organisation (RTO)

  • A nationally recognised qualification

This pathway is especially common in trades.

Skill development and career change

VET is often used as pathway for those:

  • Changing careers

  • Returning to study after time away

  • Looking to upskill for promotion or career advancement

Further specialised training or higher-level VET

You can also continue advancing within vocational education itself.

For example, you might begin with a Certificate III and then progress to a Certificate IV, followed by a Diploma and, in some cases, an Advanced Diploma.

This progression can support movement into more specialised, supervisory, or management roles over time.
